Digital, Interactive, New Media…What Say You?

Submitted by: Steve_Dunkley

Recently the debate over what to call this rapidly changing space has gotten dialed up. Trouble is, no one really agrees or has a definitive opinion on the subject. Most agencies seem torn between interactive, new media and digital.

For the past few years, our agency has chosen to call it “New Media.” And for the most part, I like the term. It reminds me of the brilliance of the old Pepsi tagline:

“Choice of the new generation.”

The copywriter that penned that phrase obviously understood that a new generation will always be emerging and that Pepsi will be their choice.

Anyway, I believe there will always be new forms of media popping on the scene.
Today it is Facebook, Twitter, Hulu, Loopt, FriendFeed and a host of others. Tomorrow, these will be the choice of the old generation. And some other media will claim the title of new.

Let us know what you would call it.

One response so far, want to say something?

“Choice of the new generation.” Was indeed a brilliant if not magical tag line.

That is yet another nice thing about blogs, one can wax melancholy and rarely fear retribution.

As for the media mentioned: It is digital and will remain so until we have another method. It is also interactive. My guess is everyone prefers new, yet I don’t because it is not new, as soon as you can name it and it comes into being, it is actually old. Which to me at least translates to living out of the past. I much prefer Advanced or Advancing Media.
