On Earth Day, Anne Springs Close Greenway shares expansion plans

The Anne Springs Close Greenway is expanding its reach with help from LGA to get the word out about improvements at the 2,100-acre Greenway, located a few minutes south of Charlotte. More than twice the size of Central Park, the Greenway has been preserved for future generations by Anne Springs Close and her family, who want to share the woods and waterways and wildlife habitat with the people of the region. Mrs. Close, the matriarch of the Springs/Close textile family, spoke to The Charlotte Observer, WFAE radio and other media on the eve of Earth Day last week to share the history of the land that has been in her family for more than 200 years, and once served as a strategic location for the Catawba Indians, early settlers, Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers, and as a cotton plantation. Now, the Greenway is adding summer camps and nature programs and studying possible improvements such as a welcome center and open-air amphitheater.
